Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy/Stem Cell Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), also called stem cell therapy, biologics or “the blood procedure,” is an exciting and minimally invasive way to address arthritis and tendon injuries. Our orthopedics doctors trained in PRP at our clinic in Phoenix, Arizona are highly trained in delivering this effective emerging stem cell treatment.

What is PRP/Stem Cell Therapy?

PRP is relatively new and is known in the healthcare world as “orthobiologics.” PRP merges the body’s natural ability to heal itself with the most innovative technology. Over the last couple decades, we have learned that the body’s platelets, when activated, release healing proteins called “growth factors” that stimulate repair. PRP uses the body’s own platelets to create this healing reaction.

What does PRP/Stem Cell Therapy Treat?

Platelet-rich plasma treatment or stem cell treatment is an especially valuable arthritis treatment and tendon injury treatment. Nearly any tendon or ligament injury can be treated with PRP providing it is not a complete tear. Many arthritis conditions can also be treated with PRP successfully.

The PRP procedure has been used to treat the following conditions:

Shoulder, Hand, Wrist: rotator cuff tendinitis, rotator cuff impingement syndrome or bursitis, bicipital tendinitis, labrum tears, arthritis, instability of the wrist/hand, DeQuervaine’s Tenosynovitis, finger tendinitis, wrist tendinitis, ligament tears, finger dysfunction.

Knee: Patellar tendinitis, patellar femoral syndrome, chondromalacia patella, partially torn or strained major ligaments of the knee (ACL/LCL/MCL), arthritis, meniscus tears, patellar instability.

Hip: Illiotibial band tendinitis (ITB syndrome), sacroiliac joint dysfunction, arthritis, psoas tendinitis, psoas bursitis, hip labrum tears, piriformis syndrome, greater trochanteric bursitis.

Foot: Tendon and ligament injuries in the foot area.

Elbow: Medial and lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow/golfer’s elbow).

How is PRP/Stem Cell Therapy Performed?

The PRP treatment or stem cell therapy is a relatively simple procedure to perform. A small amount of a patient’s blood is spun in a centrifuge that separates and concentrates the platelets. The doctor then injects the platelets into the site of the injury, typically using ultrasound guidance. The PRP procedure takes less than an hour to complete.
